LANSING, Mich.(WLNS)— Hundreds of people ran or walked through downtown Lansing earlier today for the Super Bowl 5k.

The Super Bowl 5k was hosted by the Michigan Running Foundation Sunday morning.

The race was a 3-mile run that started and ended at the Capitol.

250 runners braved the cold, all in an attempt to snag first place and raise money for their fellow youth runners.

Joseph Darda, a marathon runner, who won the entire race says this 5k was preparing him for a bigger event.

“I’m in the middle of training for a marathon,” said Darda. “I’m running the Atlanta Marathon in 3 weeks. So, this was kind of a fitness check-in race.”

Nicole Mccascle, a runner from Dewitt beat her record this year, winning in her age group of 50 to 54.

“This is something that you plan for and train for,” said Mccascle. “It’s just a great feeling.”

Although the event was a good way to stay fit, Chuck Block, CEO and President of the Michigan Running Foundation, says it’s also for a good cause.

All the proceeds from the 5k go to support local running clubs, and projects throughout Michigan.

“We’re giving Lansing a grant for $3,000 for their uniforms. We’ll give the track clubs a couple thousand dollars, and our kids you know, that’s why this is important, but what we do with giving the grants to the clubs, and the schools is really important,” said Block. “To really get our kids running, and staying active.”

The Michigan Running Foundation annually raises $60,000 in grants to help support youth running groups in Michigan.
