Check out Downtown Lansing’s newest place to get creative. Tiny Bit of Wood, a local woodworking school, provides visitors with the opportunity to make something unique for themselves or a loved one that will last. The storefront and workshop is owned by Megan Shannon, who has always had a passion for art and working with her hands.
She started Tiny Bit of Wood while working full-time at Okemos Public Schools and officially opened her studio space in downtown Lansing in April of this year. Tiny Bit of Wood offers nearly 50 types of classes ranging from individual take-home projects to furniture repair. Shannon focuses on hand-tools with the vision to get people to slow down and explore woodworking. She wants her business to be as accessible as possible – both financially and physically, ensuring that individuals with all abilities, including children can participate.
Shannon’s vision for Tiny Bit of Wood showcases the uniqueness of her business: ““I believe in the empowering and therapeutic nature of working with one’s hands,” she said. “That’s why it is my mission to create a safe and equitable space where anyone, regardless of their identity, ability or background, can learn woodworking.”
Tiny Bit of Wood is located at 507 E. Shiawassee St. in downtown Lansing, right across from Lansing Brewing Company. To learn more or sign up for a class, visit tinybitofwood.com.
