Downtown Lansing Tenant Improvement Program
The purpose of this program is to reduce vacancies, rehab older vacant commercial buildings, and support business while enhancing the physical appearance of our downtown district and improve the overall economic viability of Michigan’s Downtown.
Right of Way Permits
In Downtown Lansing, there are a number of opportunities for utilizing Public Right-of-Way spaces such as sidewalks to enhance your involvement with the neighborhood, spread the word about your business, and contribute to a vibrant downtown landscape. Submit a Right-of-Way permit to get started.
Sidewalk Cafe Furniture Grant Program
The DLI Sidewalk Cafe Furniture Grant Program encourages downtown businesses to create or improve sidewalk cafes or outdoor patios to further enhance a friendly, inviting atmosphere and inspire foot traffic. Through this program, businesses can receive one-time grants of up to $1,000 for sidewalk cafe furniture or decorative fencing specified in an approved site plan. This could include furniture elements like tables, chairs, umbrellas, and decorative fencing.
Sign Grant Program
The DLI Sign Grant Program provides a financial incentive to encourage businesses to design and install high-quality, creative, and interesting signs that add to the attractiveness and overall welcoming atmosphere in the Principal Shopping District of Downtown Lansing. The grant will reimburse up to 50% of the total cost of an approved sign, or a maximum of $1,000, to each eligible applicant on a first-come, first-served basis.
Facade Improvement Program
The City of Lansing’s Facade Improvement Program provides targeted assistance for improving the appearance and structural conditions of building facades in highly visible and critical areas of the city. Many businesses in Downtown Lansing would benefit from this support, as the City has allotted a $175,000 total grant amount in the 2023-2024 fiscal year to improve Lansing buildings’ appearances and structures.
Small Business Support Grant (currently closed)
Led by DLI and Comerica, the Small Business Support grant program is designed to provide assistance of up to $10,000 for key businesses — such as retail, dining, arts, and entertainment — that are located or will be located within the core walkable downtown area. The application period for our 2023 grants is currently closed. This grant is expected to open to applications by Summer 2024.
Building Design Services
DLI has partnered with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Michigan Main Street (MMS) to offer property and business owners support with design services through design consultations, tax credit evaluations, and other assistance. These aim to enhance buildings’ curb appeal and functionality, while preserving our neighborhood’s history.
Social District Participation
Being actively involved in the Downtown Social District offers your business another opportunity to serve customers as they sip, shop and stroll the district. Not to mention, it’s great for business. We’ve got the resources to help you get started.
