Lansing’s social districts could be here to stay.
City Council will consider a resolution to eliminate the sunset date on social districts — outdoor areas where open alcohol and food are allowed — in downtown Lansing, Old Town and Reo Town. The districts were established last April in part to accommodate outdoor socializing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The resolution was brought to the City Council by Mayor Andy Schor this week, and will be scheduled for a public hearing at an upcoming meeting.
Social districts were created under a law passed by Michigan’s Legislature in 2020, which enabled local governments to create designated areas where alcohol could be consumed. When it was passed, the state law had a sunset provision of Jan. 1, 2025.
