Sixth annual coat drive provides coats, hats and gloves to families in need

LANSING, Michigan – Mayor Andy Schor announced today that the City of Lansing will host a coat drive to provide new and gently used winter coats, hats, and gloves to children and adults in need in Lansing. Item collection started this week and will run through Friday, November 15. The coats will be distributed for free at Community Connect on Thursday, November 21, at the Downtown CATA station.

“It’s hard to believe we’re already looking ahead to winter, but now is the time to prepare. I’m asking Lansing residents to help those in the most need by donating cold-weather outerwear. Whether there’s a coat in the back of your closet that no longer fits or you can pick up an extra pair of gloves while shopping, making a donation is simple. We want every person to have the winter gear they need, and that can only happen when we all pitch in,” said Mayor Schor.

This year’s drop-off locations are:

  • Lansing City Hall, 124 W. Michigan Ave.
  • Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster Ave.
  • Gier Community Center, 2400 Hall St.
  • Schmidt Community Center, 5825 Wise Rd.
  • Letts Community Center, 1220 W. Kalamazoo St.

New or gently used coats, hats, and gloves are accepted. All sizes are needed, especially men’s larger sizes. Donations can be deposited in the large container located outside of Lansing City Hall and bins that are inside Lansing community centers.

“Our coat drive stands as a vital reminder of the warmth and dignity every individual deserves. By coming together as a community, we can provide not just warmth, but hope and support to those facing homelessness. Every coat collected is a step toward helping our neighbors in need, demonstrating that together, we can make a difference,” said Kimberly A. Coleman, Lansing Human Relations and Community Services Director.

The drive is hosted by the City’s Human Relations and Community Services Department, with additional support from Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners and Midwest Recycling.
