We are excited to introduce a new Dear Downtown segment. This segment is written by guest writers highlighting unique perspectives, prose and other creative takes on what they love about Downtown. We hope you enjoy our first letter written by Stephanie Van Koevering!
“Dear Downtown Lansing,
I like to run. I’m not fast—and I look funny doing it—but it brings me joy. From the moment I lace up my running shoes and step onto your streets for one of the traditional downtown races, I feel a rush of excitement and anticipation. From the Capital City River Run to the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot; you offer remarkable celebrations of community, health, and the vibrant spirit that flows through your heart.
With each stride, I take in the beauty of your historic buildings, the charm of your tree-lined streets, and the welcoming smiles of fellow runners and supporters. Your courses are lovely and varied, but all offer a perfect blend of urban energy and natural beauty. As I run past iconic landmarks and past picturesque parks, I am reminded of the rich history and dynamic culture that make you, Downtown Lansing, truly special.
Your 5K races are a testament to the strength and unity of our community. They bring together people of all ages and backgrounds, each with their own story, united by a common goal. Whether it’s the seasoned marathoner chasing a new personal best or the family walking hand-in-hand, your races inspire us all to push our limits and support one another.
The cheers from the sidelines, the encouraging words from volunteers, and the camaraderie among participants create an atmosphere of delight and motivation. It’s a powerful reminder that, in this bustling city, we are all part of something bigger. We are not just running a race; we are part of a tradition that celebrates health, perseverance, and the unbreakable bond of community.
After crossing the finish line, the sense of accomplishment is sweetened by the warm embrace of your local businesses and eateries. You, Downtown Lansing, provide a space where memories are made, friendships are forged, and the spirit of togetherness is always alive.
Thank you, Downtown Lansing, for hosting these wonderful 5K races. Thank you for the early mornings, the cheering crowds, the lovely routes, and the countless moments of inspiration. You remind us that no matter how far we run, we always have a place to call home. Here’s to many more races, many more milestones, and many more cherished moments in the heart of our beloved city.
With all my heart and gratitude,
Stephanie Van Koevering”
