July Letter from the Director

Cathleen

As our nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on the many changes, challenges, and opportunities that have shaped Michigan’s Downtown over the years. Through the years of economic shifts, changing workplace trends, and periods of growth and reinvention, one thing has remained constant – Downtown Lansing continues to stand as the heart of our Capital City.

Downtown Lansing serves as the center of government, the front door to our State Capitol, and a place where history, commerce, culture, and community come together. It is where our riverfront connects neighborhoods, where entrepreneurs launch new dreams alongside beloved legacy businesses, and where residents, workers, and visitors gather to experience a taste of the Capital City.

Michigan’s Downtown is more than a place — it is the economic, civic, and cultural heart of Lansing. It deserves the attention, investment, and support of all of us — residents, businesses, community partners, local leaders, and state policymakers alike.

As we look toward the future, we know that a stronger downtown requires a shared vision and a commitment to addressing the opportunities as well as the challenges before us. From public infrastructure improvements and economic development resources, to housing, support for vulnerable community members, public space enhancements, and place management - the decisions we make today will shape the downtown we leave for future generations.

When we choose to invest in Downtown Lansing, champion its successes, and show up for this place we call home, we create visible and lasting change.

Over the past three months, Downtown Lansing Inc. has been meeting with business owners, residents, property owners, community organizations, and public partners to listen, learn, and identify priorities for our district. These conversations are helping shape future advocacy efforts and investments that will strengthen Michigan’s Downtown for years to come. We want to hear from you. Whether you have ideas, solutions, concerns, or experiences you’d like to share, your voice matters.

Please send your feedback [email protected] and join us in helping shape the future of Downtown Lansing! If you’d like to become involved as a volunteer to be a part of the programs and planning for Michigan’s Downtown, please contact [email protected].

 Sincerely,

Cathleen Edgerly
