'Sad Little Town.' Now there's a T-shirt celebrating Lansing

Michigan Capitol building

LANSING — "Sad Little Town" is now on T-shirts.

The remark, which many in the region saw as disparaging for Michigan's capital city, was penned by Detroit Free Press Editorial Page Editor Nancy Kaffer in a column suggesting the state move the capital from Lansing to Detroit. The Free Press has said the column was intended to be humorous.

It's been adopted by Downtown Lansing, Inc., the city’s downtown management group.

The organization printing the T-shirts said it will be giving a portion of profits from the sales to Downtown Lansing, Inc., REO Town, Old Town Lansing and the South West Action Group.“We were pleased to see various neighborhoods and business districts receiving support from the sales of the shirts,” said Cathleen Edgerly, executive director of Downtown Lansing Inc. “Lansing is a city that has united together."

Edgerly published her own response to the column, among several written this week.
