Lansing expands downtown social district to include four new businesses

LANSING, Mich. — Lansing’s downtown social district welcomed four new businesses Monday after city council unanimously approved an ordinance expanding the area where customers can take alcoholic beverages outside.

The social district allows customers to purchase drinks from participating bars and restaurants and carry them onto sidewalks within designated boundaries. City council worked with Downtown Lansing Inc. to add the new businesses to the program.

Where Lansing Began

Lansing became Michigan’s Capital in 1847. At the time, the area was mostly farmland and woods. Leaders chose Lansing because of its central location. As state government moved in, the downtown area began to take shape.
